FreeCAD gives machine builders a serious free parametric modeler — but choreographing realistic machine motion is outside its scope. DynMech Motion is the missing motion module: commercial, focused, and connected to FreeCAD by nothing more exotic than a STEP file.
1 · Model in FreeCAD, as usual
Parts, assemblies, constraints — nothing about your FreeCAD workflow changes.
2 · Export STEP, import into Motion
File → Export → STEP. Drop the file into Motion: the assembly tree arrives with hierarchy and colors intact, and rotation axes are picked directly off cylindrical faces.
3 · Choreograph real machine behavior
S-curve and trapezoidal velocity profiles, signal handshakes (“the gripper picks only after the conveyor arrives”), collision-triggered pauses — logic blocks, not keyframes.
4 · Share with people who install nothing
Free Player for offline review, QR-code links that open on a phone, glTF for web pages and slides. Your customer never needs a CAD seat — or FreeCAD.
Frequently asked questions
Does DynMech Motion run inside FreeCAD?
No — it is a standalone application, not a workbench. The handoff is a STEP export: File → Export in FreeCAD, then open or drag the file into Motion. Assembly hierarchy and part colors are preserved.
Why not just use a FreeCAD animation workbench?
Community workbenches interpolate positions between keyframes. Motion drives parts with industrial velocity profiles (trapezoidal, jerk-limited S-curve), signal-based interlocks and collision-triggered responses — machine behavior rather than tweened frames — and exports shareable animations your customer can view without installing anything.
